Super Deep Diamonds
Welcome to a new WiRe Science Communication Video, made by WiRe Fellow Dr. Fernanda Gervasoni.
Deep beneath our feet, at depths where pressure is immense and temperatures soar, diamonds carry secrets from another world — the Earth’s mantle. Dr. Fernanda Gervasoni unravels these secrets by studying diamonds formed 400–700 kilometers below the surface. Through her research, she deciphers the mantle’s redox state — a key to understanding how vital elements like carbon, oxygen, and hydrogen move, react, and give rise to magma.
