In the ever-evolving landscape of academia, one thing remains constant: securing research funding is both essential and daunting. Today, researchers at the University of Münster had the unique opportunity to demystify this process during a dynamic and insightful workshop: “Planting Academic Roots: Navigating Research Funding in Germany”
Brought to life by SAFIR – the university’s central service for research funding advice and proposal support, the workshop offered more than just information. It opened up space for real conversations—the kind where challenges are named, questions are welcomed, and support feels tangible.
What We Learned!
The day revolved around a clear mission: helping researchers better understand and navigate the world of research funding in Germany. Whether you’re just starting your research journey or refining your next proposal, there was something for everyone. Key highlights included:
1. Who Funds Research in Germany?
The session unpacked the landscape of funding bodies – from the DFG (German Research Foundation) and BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research) to international opportunities via the EU and foundations.
2. Strategic Acquisition of Third-Party Funding – in 3 Steps
Forget vague advice—SAFIR laid out a concrete, strategic approach:
Step 1: Clarify your project idea and align it with the goals of potential funders.
Step 2: Build your timeline and identify key contacts early.
Step 3: Develop a strong narrative and tailor your proposal to the funder’s perspective.
3. Fellowship vs. Own Position: What’s the Difference?
One of the workshop’s most practical takeaways was the discussion around funding formats. What’s the difference between applying for a fellowship and applying for an “own position”? The SAFIR team explained not just the technical distinctions, but also the strategic implications for career planning, host institution involvement, and long-term research goals. Thank You, SAFIR!
We’re incredibly grateful to the SAFIR team for offering not only their expertise but their time and support.
