Dr Glory Edwards – Mapping the Future: Sustainability Science, Stakeholder Voices, and the Power of Systems Thinking

Hello, my name is Glory. My work centres on the sustainability of complex social-ecological systems to limit trade-offs and maximise synergies. I use fuzzy cognitive mapping, land use modelling, scenario development, machine learning etc. as part of a suite of system analysis tools, often in participatory settings, to assess past and current systems and to develop future scenarios.

I completed my Bachelor’s degree in Nigeria in Agriculture (Fisheries specialization), followed by a Master’s degree in Aquatic Pathobiology at the University of Stirling (UK). I then shifted from laboratory work to more field-based, stakeholder-engaging research. This led me to pursue another Master’s degree in Climate Change, Development and Policy at the University of Sussex (UK), and thereafter a PhD at Wageningen University on sustainability in agri-food systems and a postdoc on climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies in EU case studies. For my WiRe fellowship, hosted by Prof. Dr. Ute Hamer at the Institute of Landscape Ecology at the University of Münster, I work within the German Biodiversity Exploratories.

With expertise in qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative methods, I adapt easily to different projects, acting as a wildcard by employing various skills as needed. Beyond research, I enjoy mentoring and coaching. Writing is another passion of mine and I have authored a few non-fiction books. I am also active in my community, where I find joy in building connections through friendships, faith and fellowship.

Fun fact: I love crafting, cooking and experimenting with new recipes as a creative outlet. I am also experimenting with growing more herbs and vegetables.
